Along with the health benefits and the animal welfare standpoint, advocates of a plant-based diet often tout the environmental pluses of ditching animal products.
As studies show, livestock production has a long list of planetary burdens, from rampant land use to water depletion and pollution, and is a mass contributor of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Lead researcher Joseph Poore said to the Guardian that adopting a vegan diet is “the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use, and water use.” Poore himself became vegan after his first year of research.
